A “Joint Subcommittee” of the Planning Commission, Zoning Adjustments and other bodies has developed proposals to reduce density on Berkeley’s arterials by imposing new development controls. These policies are an over-reach of the Subcommittee's task and inconsistent with Berkeley's goal to reduce greenhouse gases. We need to embrace good policy -- encouraging density and transit on Berkeley’s major corridors. Livable Berkeley believes the proposed new standards will substantially reduce the building envelope along our commercial corridors. We are working with the Berkeley Design Advocates (BDA) to encourage the City's decision makers not to reduce development on the City's major corridors. BDA's letter on this issue is attached.
